Refugee Action’s response to Comprehensive Spending Review

Wednesday, October 20th, 2010

In response to the Comprehensive Spending Review in which the Home Office is set to make cuts of 23% to its budget over four years, Dave Garratt, acting Chief Executive of Refugee Action, said:

“Refugee Action is acutely aware of the need to make spending cuts within the Home Office, and we welcome UKBA plans to cut their budget by reducing waste and simplifying systems. It is also vital that people fleeing war and human rights abuses get the protection they deserve. We believe that voluntary sector agencies like Refugee Action are the key to getting this balance right.  (more…)

Lights, action, sound … Secret Millionaire

Wednesday, March 17th, 2010

Aidan Hallet

So, it’s happened. We’ve done it. The Secret Millionaire has been to Refugee Action and done his stuff, and the watching public has heard a little about the struggle faced by destitute asylum seekers.

My phone never stopped ringing and beeping after the programme started, with loads of wonderful and supportive messages from colleagues, friends, family etc. Some of you liked the cross-stitch on our wall (a wedding present from a friend nearly 17 years ago), my best friend wondered idly on exactly which date we had purchased our new car! My wife was relieved the house looked decent. I must confess I was slightly disappointed that Mo, our cat, despite being filmed outside the house on the day Jahan came to visit, didn’t make it into the final cut.

Aidan Hallet

So, at last, the secret’s out. It’s been hard enough keeping it to myself since October. By now you’ll all know what’s been happening.

But I’m getting ahead of myself. Before I tell you what’s happened, I need to tell you how we got to this point.

Over the last few months, as well as raising money by walking to Loughborough and back, I’ve been part of a team thinking about the problem of destitute asylum seekers and how we can find long term solutions to their destitution.

Human Rights Day

Thursday, December 10th, 2009

sandy low res

Sixty-one years ago today, the UN General Assembly adopted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, guaranteeing everyone the essential freedoms which most of us take for granted.

It provided a guide for people all around the world to help them understand what their rights are and how they can defend them.

Its message – that all human beings have the right to dignity and equality – is as relevant today as it was in 1948.

Musa and Esme take to the stage with Michael Palin at the Royal Geographic Society

Musa and Esme take to the stage with Michael Palin at the Royal Geographic Society

Since he applied for sanctuary in the UK on his birthday in January 2003, Musa Ibrahim has become all too accustomed to being interviewed. From his asylum interview and subsequent appeal hearings to his volunteering interview at Refugee Action and appearances on local radio, Musa has spent the past six years fielding questions posed by a whole host of British people.

Indeed as a volunteer with our Refugee Awareness Project in Bristol, talking to community groups about his experiences of being a refugee, he got pretty used to being grilled about why he fled Somalia by school children, youth workers and firefighters alike.

So when Michael Palin asked to interview him as part of a new series of talks at the Royal Geographical Society, he was more laid back than I was. (more…)

Friday, October 16th, 2009

The government has led 44 Iraqi asylum seekers on a not-so-merry dance, flying them back home, only to bring most of them back to the UK today. The asylum seekers had their cases rejected by the Home Office, despite the obvious danger to civilians living in Iraq.
