Had a splendid time at the regular Thursday night quiz at the Swan and Rushes last night. I asked Grant (landlord and quizmaster) if he would include some questions about refugees if I sent them to him. He agreed and allowed me to bring in some leaflets and a poster about Simple Acts.
It was a busy night at the quiz – 60 people were there in 10 teams – more than usual. Grant used my questions for the ‘connections’ round – identify five famous people and work out the connection between them.
At the interval (when he served up food, as he always does – a big pot of chilli and a big pot of sweet potato curry – yum!) he explained that the connection, which no one had got, was that they were all refugees and that the round had been included because of Refugee Week.
He explained that some Refugee Action staff were there and would be giving out some materials, so Martyn and I distributed ‘propaganda relating to Round 1’ in the form of our Mobiles, Money and Mayhem: the facts and fibs aout asylum booklets and some of the Simple Acts cards. People didn’t object and I saw several people reading the booklets afterwards.
At the end of the quiz I distributed some DVDs and a book between the members of the three teams who’d identified all five of the refugees.
I don’t know what people thought about it all, but no one was nasty about it and I hope the other customers found it all at least interesting. It was a good chance to introduce refugee issues where they might not normally be discussed – and another Simple Act ticked off the list!
