The Secret Diary of a Karaoke Addict Aged 31 and 3/4: The winner takes it all

And the winners of the hotly contested sing-offs at the London leg of charioke were…

Top fundraiser

Although Reverend Vanessa from Refugee Action‘s team was streaking ahead in this category initially (raising £1,030 overall), she was blown out of the water by the marvellous Martin who signed up for charioke just four days before the Islington event. Martin raised an incredible £2,125.34 for Food Chain and was awarded a Lucky Voice Golden Ticket for his awe-inspiring events.

Best performance in the Abba category

Pusia from Refugee Action Pod 6 won a box of beauty treats donated by Love Lula for her rendition of Dancing Queen. The judge described her performance (complete with costume change) as ‘show-stopping and super sexy’.

Special mention was made of Mia and Lizzie from Asthma UK’s performance of Mamma Mia, who the judge said ‘completely embraced the spirit of Abba’ and ‘threw some good shapes’.

Best performance in the rap and urban category

Youth Music’s Helen and Paul took home a bag of books donated by Foyles for their performance of Stan. The judge was blown away by the performance citing it, ‘Good enough to be recorded’.

Laurie from Refugee Action Pod 6 was also highly commended for his take on Jump Around. The judge described him as having ‘terrific presence’.

Best performance in the rock chick/god category

The lunch vouchers for Ottolenghi’s went to Sonia from Refugee Action Pod 6 for her styling of Sweet Child of Mine. Special mention was also made of Matt and Lizzie’s (Asthma UK) rendition of Paradise.

Best performance in the Michael Jackson tribute category

The winners of the Monkeychargers donated by Firebox were Alex and Tyrell from the Serenity Foundation team who performed Man in the Mirror. Hot on their heels were the ‘great vocals’ of Paul (Asthma UK) with Billie Jean, and Scene and Heard’s Louisa and Mufrida’s rendition of Ben who ‘sang with the heart’.

Best performance in the showtunes category

The judge declared a joint winner here: Martin’s terrific performance of On My Own in support of Food Chain in the Lucky Dip pod, and Nathalie’s (Refugee Action) showstopping All That Jazz. As Martin had already scooped the top fundraiser award, Nathalie was awarded vouchers donated by American Apparel.

Best performance in the diva category

This was taken home by Sarah Louise from Scene and Heard’s tag team for her performance of Like A Prayer. The judge commended the ‘excellent nuns’ and awarded a book voucher donated by the London Review Bookshop. A close second was Dougie from Youth Music who took on I Have Nothing and according to the judge, ‘really channelled Whitney’.

Best performance in the power ballad category

The winner in this category was Jen from the Lucky Dip room (singing for Food Chain) who performed Total Eclipse of the Heart. Jen won a designer handbag donated by Red Magazine. The judge described her as a ‘joy to watch’.

Best performance in the charity song category

In this category, teams had to choose a famous charity song or a song they felt best summarised the ethos and role of the charity they were singing for. The winners of this category and that of Best Costume were the Asthma UK team, who performed ‘Every Breath I Take’. They won a goodie bag of CDs and band merchandise donated by EMI.

Highly commended in this category were:

Youth Music’s Thank You for Youth Music who the judge described as ‘very enthusiastic’ and a ‘real team effort’.

Scene and Heard’s We Are Family, which had a ‘real family vibe’.

Refugee Action Pod 6’s Angels, for its ‘high quality furniture climbing’ and ‘good use of balloons’.

Many thanks to all the companies that donated prizes and to our judges Nicaise, Katie, David and Joanna.
