I have fifteen new grey hairs in my head and I am dedicating each and every one to the Brighton leg of the charioke. Although in London we had so many interested charities we could have filled Lucky Voice Islington twice over, Brighton still won’t bite.
Grrr… After the soaring success of Islington, I have nightmares about tumbleweed blowing through Brighton Lucky Voice.
Even recruiting singers for Refugee Action’s team proves impossible and I start to import talent from London. I am so disillusioned with Brighton I start plotting to move to Plymouth.
Luckily Maria from Terence Higgins Trust and Harriet from WAC are the beacons of light that brighten my Brighton. Maria has a tag team of 24 singers making a Lucky Voice pilgrimage throughout the day and Harriet has some dedicated performers voyaging down from the Big Smoke.
Local businesses perform heroics when it comes to food and prizes though. Higgidy load us up with more delicious quiches than you could consume in a lifetime, Indulgence Cupcakes pledge a plethora of tasty mini-cupcakes to our cause and the Real Patisserie also put their pastry behind us. Oak Tree Coaching’s generosity also shouts us some pizzas on the night and Grand Pier offer to put my non-Brighton dwelling colleague up for free.
On the prize front, we have wine and choccies from the principled folk at Infinity Foods, hardbacks from City Books, tix for the flix from Duke of York’s, vouchers from American Apparel and Firebox, the legendary Golden Ticket from Lucky Voice, a Dinny Hall bracelet donated by Red Magazine, and a haircut at Aveda with one of their singing hair stylists.
And naturellement, I have hit my nearest and dearest with the ACE offensive: my other half has been reluctantly recruited to sing, along with Dr Mike and Neale n’Mimi from Londonium, and two of my BFs are so dedicated in their love for me or charioke (the two have morphed into one) that they come down for a reprise, having rocked Islington just a week ago.
As the weekend strikes, I decide that hyperventilating is overrated as a problem-solving mechanism and resign myself to the fact that what Brighton lacks in numbers, it will more than make up for in charioke dedication.
