The Secret Diary of a Karaoke Addict Aged 31 and 3/4: Everyone’s a winner, baby, at Charioke-by-sea

The competition in Brighton was not quite as fierce as in London, given the smaller number of teams and singers. What’s more, despite being the biggest team on the day, the THT team was not as full to the brim of show offs as other teams, so also fielded less contenders than others.

However, that’s not to say that the talent wasn’t as impressive by the sea – oh no. There were plenty of X-Factor-missed-me-this-year starlets to prompt a standing ovation or five.

And the winners were…

Top fundraiser

Robin took home a Lucky Voice Golden Ticket for raising £500 for local charity PARC. His efforts were all the more impressive given that all his fundraising was done offline. (Fundraisers take note, postmodernity can still be trumped by tradition).

Best performance in the Abba category

Nathalie B from the WAC team won vouchers donated by American Apparel for her rendition of Waterloo. Hot on her heels just half a point behind was Katie’s performance of Supertrooper, singing for Refugee Action in the Lucky Dip pod.

Best performance in the rap and urban category

THT’s Simone took home two cinema tickets donated by Duke of York’s for his performance of Numb.

Best performance in the rock chick/god category

The £35 voucher donated by Firebox went to Nathalie B from WAC for her styling of Bon Jovi’s Livin’ On A Prayer.

Best performance in the showtunes category

Rachel’s touching performance of Don’t Cry For Me Argentina in support of Endometriosis UK in the Lucky Dip pod won her a haircut at Aveda. However, Harriet from WAC was only half a point behind with her rendition of Diamonds Are A Girl’s Best Friend.

Best performance in the diva category

This was hotly contended with Sam from WAC taking home first prize for What’s Love Got To Do With It. The judge said, ‘I actually thought she was Tina Turner’. Sam won a bottle of wine and chocolates donated by Infinity Foods and a Dinny Hall bracelet donated by Red Magazine.

Rachel’s performance of My Heart Will Go On was also highly recommended and got a special mention for being ‘much less annoying than Celine Dion’ and being accompanied by ‘spectacular theatrics’ by the rest of the Lucky Dip pod-dwellers, especially Katie and Neil from the Refugee Action squad.

Best performance in the power ballad category

The winner in this category was Robin, singing Lone Star for PARC in the Lucky Dip room. He won a signed Rick Stein book donated by City Books.

Best performance in the charity song category

In this category, teams had to choose a famous charity song or a song they felt best summarised the ethos and role of the charity they were singing for. The winners of this category were the Lucky Dip team, representing Refugee Action, PARC and Endo UK. Their rendition of Lean On Me was praised for the ‘vocal range of the solo’ and ‘very groupy’ vibe. The group shared a bottle of Prosecco donated by Lucky Voice and a box of chocolates and wine donated by Infinity Foods.

Many thanks to all the companies that donated prizes and to our judges Katie and Shaheen. Special shout out to Rachel and the WAC team for bringing a host of props above and beyond the usual Lucky Voice provisions. That’s charioke dedication for you.
