One of the striking things about doing the walk to raise money for destitute asylum seekers has been people’s generosity in giving. I have raised significantly more on my justgiving page than I ever anticipated, and some of those gifts have been very generous.
It’s also very encouraging and quite humbling to receive sponsorship from people I have never heard of, in some cases friends of friends, in other cases, people of good will who just saw some of the publicity and wanted to support what they believe to be a good cause.
It’s been lovely at church recently, as people I don’t know very well, in some cases not even by name, have come up to me and discreetly pressed money into my hand with a word or two of encouragement or a comment that it’s ‘for my cause’. I don’t know if all these people fully share my views on asylum seekers, or what should be done about the fact that many of them end up destitute, but people are ‘putting their money where their mouth is’ and giving very generously… and that’s good enough for me!
