The Secret Diary of a Karaoke Addict Aged 31 and 3/4: We are the world, we are the people

Given that we’re not by definition an arts charity, or a singing charity, or a music charity like some of the charity friends we know and love, Refugee Action surprisingly does have more than a touch of Fame Academy about it.

Amongst our ranks we have belly dancers, flamenco dancers, pop stars from West Africa, guitarists, crooners of Kurdish ballads, drummers, Abba-enthusiasts, solo vocalists, wannabee Shakiras – the works.

Our musical credentials are most strongly embedded in the heart and soul of the Liverpool office where, trivia fans, John Lennon married his first wife.

People there have been known to start and end the day with a sing up and various caseworkers there have at times formed a band. This band of merry caseworkers have oft entertained the rest of us with their reworking of Beatles songs into corporate anthems, and impromptu acoustic versions of I Think We’re Alone Now. Yup, Refugee Action has certainly got talent.

So as a hat tip to all the professional and amateur crooners at Refugee Action – staff and volunteers – we thought we’d put together a Refugee Action playlist.

So here we go, in no particular order… an eclectic mix of tunes that provides a fitting soundtrack to our support, advice and campaign work with refugees. Let us know if we’ve missed anything.
