Working for a charity has a touch of the Oliver Twists about it.
You feel as if you’re perpetually scurrying around with a large begging bowl, whimpering at companies, friends, journalists, celebrities…
‘Please, Sir? Can I have some more?’
This week has been no exception as I’ve been stalking various innocent companies and pleading with them for freebies. Free food to ensure our singers don’t pass out mid-Mariah. Prizes for our sing-offs to incentivise them to really give it their all, X-Factor style.
So here’s a quick shout out to all the good, good people who didn’t put the phone down as soon as they heard the words ‘charity’ and ‘event’. May the karaoke gods smile on you all.
In the ‘lining our tummies’ corner we have:
Oak Tree Coaching sponsoring pizzas (they are the crazy cats that got me into this fine charioke mess in the first place by making me think I could do anything, for you dear, anything)
Iznik resto for some tasty Turkish snacks
Crumbs and Doilies for colourful cup cakes
Pret-a-Manger for everything that is prêt-a-manger
The Roving Chef for some cake action
Refugee Action’s very own Lyn Adams for her famed pies
[Insert your Mexican wave here]
In the ‘points mean prizes’ corner, we have (and not a Blankety-Blank cheque book and pen among them):
Ottolenghi’s for top-end luncheon vouchers
Firebox for state-of-the-art gadgets
Foyle’s, London Review Bookshop and New Beacon Books for reading matter
American Apparel for fluoro lycra vouchers
Love Lula for goodies to make us feel pretty, oh so pretty
EMI for the tunes
Red magazine for the statement handbag of the season
Lucky Voice for the Golden Ticket
[Inset your oohing and aahing here]
Chariokers, I want to see blood, sweat and tears on the karaoke floor for them there goodies.
