The Secret Diary of a Karaoke Addict Aged 31 and 3/4: Don’t Let Me Down

The past few days have been a flurry of emails. Emails to charities. Emails to businesses. Emails to our supporters. Emails to Lucky Voice. Emails to friends. Emails to relatives. Emails to people I pass on the street. Emails to potential singer-fundraisers. Emails to myself.

In London, the demand from charities is awe-inspiring. I end up feeling like a surly bouncer at a nightclub, snarling ‘We’re full, love. One in, one out’, as it quickly becomes apparent that we have too many interested charities for the private rooms at Islington.

But after the initial ‘wheyhey, charioke!’ euphoria has faded, some lovely charities pull out, as the tight timescale makes it difficult for them to recruit singer-fundraisers or because their flagship fundraising dinner and dance/party/campaign needs to take precedence. I start to feel like less of a baddie and more of a fairy godmother as I’m able to offer a couple of charities on the waiting list last-minute places. (“Cinderella, you shall go to charioke ball”).

Brighton however, is a whole other ball game. Now, you’d think that B-Right-On with its reputation for left-field, left-wing soft-heartedness would take charioke to its bosom. But it’s proving a tough sell. Where’s the energy that the city I’ve made my home is known for? Come on, Brighton, Don’t Let Me Down

As charities and organisations sign up and then sign out, I start to feel like I’m watching a Saturday roll call of football results crossed with Wimbledon:

Asthma UK – In.  Reprieve – In.
Serenity Foundation – In. Reprieve – Out.
WDM – In. Sing Up for Youth Music– In.
Just For Kids Law- In. Food Chain – In.
Body and Soul – In. THT – In.
Body and Soul – Out. Brighton Pride – In.
WDM –Out. Chestnut Tree House– In.
Children of the Andes – In. Chestnut Tree House – Out.
Sussex RAG – In.

Thank goodness for the humble spreadsheet, eh?
