The Secret Diary of a Karaoke Addict Aged 31 and ¾: When the going gets tough, the tough get karaoke

There is an ancient Zen master saying in Refugee Action’s Fundraising and Communications Team that sayeth, ‘When the going gets tough, the tough get karaoke’.

There. We’ve confessed it.

Our name is Refugee Action, and we’re addicted to karaoke.

After A Hard Day’s Night fighting tough government reforms to the asylum system, there’s nothing the team likes better than to sing away our sorrows, warble away our Woolas-inflicted woes, chorus away our campaign cares…

Some offices decamp to the pub after a taxing day. Some go and sweat out the stress in the local gym. Others over in the Square Mile high tail it to insalubrious night clubs.

But we band of merry folk prefer a round of rollicking karaoke. And not any old karaoke, mind. Oh no. Our addiction takes a superior form and it’s called Lucky Voice.

For those of you who have not yet been touched by the evangelical zeal of a Lucky Voice connoisseur, Lucky Voice is a wonderful labyrinth of state-of-the-art private karaoke rooms. And on a Monday evening they offer two hours’ of free karaoke indulgence to charity folk as part of their Worthy Workers scheme. Yup, FREE. Gratis. All you have to do is flex your charity number.

So we’re not shallow here at Refugee Action. We don’t just love Lucky Voice for its looks, we also love it for its personality and altruistic heart.

But there’s always one problem with our Lucky Voice pilgrimages. For hard-core addicts like us, a couple of Lucky Voice hours are never enough. You always want more and forever find yourself pleading in an undignified manner with the Lucky Voice staffer for just one more hit… purlease?

And so, one fine summer’s day, as we found ourselves piled into a Lucky Voice booth after a week of pre-Refugee Week stress, the solution came to me, like a dream:

A karaoke marathon.
